Yaniel Matos cello piano vocals Gunther Tiedemann cello
Gunther Tiedemann and Yaniel Matos competed at the 23rd New Directions Cello Festival in 2017 Ithaca/New York and immediately developed a mutual personal and musical sympathy which culminated in the duo collaboration at the 25th Rio Cello Festival in Rio de Janeiro in 2019. 2020 Yaniel Matos was invited by Gunther Tiedemann with the Cologne String Big Band - the String Big Band of the Cologne University of Music and Dance - on stage and played concerts with the Gunther Tiedemann - David Plate Duo.
In their duo, they are looking forward to the music they both bring with them – their own and those of others, old and new – but with very personal meaning.
Yaniel Matos comes from Santiago de Cuba, the eastern part of Cuba that is most affected by the black culture. He lived in São Paulo/Brazil for 24 years. His music arises from the clash of traditional elements from the region from which he comes and the influence of a more European-oriented musical education. The experience of Brazilian music leads him to a new relationship with Black Bahian culture, creating new rhythms, colors and a different way of experiencing South American music.
